Bale Family Buzz
Christian Bale and Sibi Blazic

For Christian Bale, it's been a week of serious ups and downs. In the same seven days that his turn as Batman broke box office records, he appeared before police on accusations of attacking his mother and sister. Both events pushed searches on the star to dizzying heights. But it was news of the arrest that thrust his family into the public eye, too.

According to reports, the Welsh-born actor's mother, Jenny Bale, and one of his sisters, Sharon Bale, accused him of assault. Searches on both women's names immediately surged, as did "christian bale mother." The fact that Bale's mom was once a circus clown proved irresistible to a number of news outlets; several of them quickly worked the detail into attention-grabbing headlines.

On Wednesday, we learned "The Dark Knight" performer may have reacted to unflattering things said about his wife of eight years, Sibi Blazic. But even before that development emerged, movie-watchers and news-hounds sought Bale's spouse online. Over the past 24 hours, demand for her name rose 979%.

Other members of Bale's family also found themselves the subject of intense e-gawking. Searches jumped for Bale's other sister, Louise, and his father, David. Many fans were surprised to discover that David Bale, who died in 2003, was married to Gloria Steinem, thus making the feminist icon Christian Bale's stepmother. Searches on Steinem vaulted skyward, tying her to the Bale family drama and the son's week of whipsawing exposure—and skyrocketing buzz.

The End of Emo?
Fall Out Boy

How many times have you seen a kid coming out of Hot Topic dressed in full “emo wear” and thought to yourself, “There outta be a law.” Well, Russia’s way ahead of you.

The country is considering “banning” emo clothes and music because it is dangerous to teens. According to Current, “everything from websites to dressing in emo attire will be prosecuted.”

NME.com goes into more detail. Due to fears that emo may contribute to teen depression and suicide, lawmakers are formulating legislation that would “heavily regulate” emo websites and “ban emo and goth dress style in schools and government buildings.” Believe it or not, the bill is expected to pass.

We were under the impression that emo was passé. However, the Search data says otherwise. Lookups on the guyliner-wearing, crusty hair-sporting, black t-shirt-wearing music genre are twice as high as they were two years ago. Additionally, emo-light posterboys Fall Out Boy continue to score in Search.

Whether banning emo is a logical way to help troubled teens, we don’t know. But we do know this. If this law stops just one kid from wearing guyliner, it will have all been worth it.

A Rainbow Nano
Apple

Old school Mac-addicts know that Apple’s logo used to be rainbow colored. At some point during the ‘90s, Apple ditched the ROYGBIV for a more monochromatic look. Now, in a bit of retro-fueled mania, the house that Jobs built is bringing it back. Maybe.

According to UberGizmo, the forthcoming iPod nano will “appear in multiple colors on a single device.” The blog also explains that the updated nano will feature more memory, more features, etc. But, really, all that’s to be expected. It’s the possibility of rocking a rainbow in our pocket that has us intrigued. Is this rumor true or rotten to the core? Stay tuned.

A Real Fight Club

The first rule of Fight Club: You do not talk about Fight Club. The second rule of Fight Club: You do not get blood on tourists coming out of the Disney Store. Confused? Allow us to explain.

Current is reporting that an actual fight club (inspired by the movie, which was inspired by the novel) is staging brutal matches in the middle of Union Square in New York City. Passersby are encouraged to watch, cheer, and (of course) donate money.

The group calls themselves the “Union Square Spartans.” The article notes that most of the combatants are homeless men with “stage names” like Spider, Legend, and Science. The group has posted 20 of their videos to YouTube and we’ve noticed a slight uptick in searches for “real fight clubs” and “fight club videos.”

Along those lines, HowStuffWorks, answers what now seems like an obvious question: Are there real fight clubs? Indeed there are, though most fight underground. To that end, we continue to see a variety of lookups for “underground fight clubs” and “female fight clubs.” Oh, and “fight club workout, too." We presume that last query comes from folks who want to look like a ripped warrior without getting their face bashed. We’re not sure if that’s allowed by the official rules, but it should be.
